October will strengthen discussions on economic and community development. Moreover, the Global Grant system, which support large international activities in the Rotary's areas of focus, will help respond to real community needs.

According to the United Nations, global unemployment increased from 170 million people in 2007 to nearly 200 million in 2017, about 75 million of whom were young women and young men. October, Rotary Economic and Community Development Month, is a great opportunity to leverage your vocational skills to help meet the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 8: promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth, employment, and decent work for all. https://sustainabledevelopment.un.org/sdg8

Unfortunately, half of the world’s population still lives on around US$2 a day. Having a job, in too many places, doesn’t mean that you are able to escape from poverty. The continued lack of decent work opportunities, insufficient investments and under-consumption lead to an erosion of the basic social contract underlying democratic societies: that all must share in progress.
In fact, job creation must be at the core of economic, policy-making and development plans, in order to generate decent work opportunities, more robust, inclusive and poverty-reducing growth. It is a virtuous circle that is as good for the economy as it is for people and one that drives sustainable development.

Let us inspire and empower others during Rotary Economic and Community Development Month.

24 October, worldwide Polio day:
During the month of October 2018, we will have the opportunity to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Polio GPEI (1988-2018), who joined Rotary International within his worldwide health program, the PolioPlus, to eradicate polio starting from 1979 within a 3H project in The Philippines and then becoming our organization flag since 1985. We will also grab the chance to celebrate the 30th anniversary of WHO, UNICEF, CDC and BMGF which joined the Rotary in parallel with Polio GREI.

We can continue to support the PolioPlus program and contribute to eradicating this disease which, since three decades ago, was one of the main causes of infant mortality and paralysis. It should be noted that the District 2452 target for RY 2018-2019 is US$100.000.

A District event for social mobilization will be organized by RC of Aley, Lebanon on the 21st of October 2018. 2000 participants will join the Rotary to run for Polio (Walk-A-Thon starts at 7:00am, Lunch-Kermesse at 1:00pm), to support vaccination against polio virus, to encourage runners, to taste the succulent various dishes served in booth spaces at lunch (1:00pm) and for fun with friends. Another event will be held on 23rd and 24th October (more information will be announced later). It will be sponsored by Sanofi Pasteur (RI International Partner for Polio) and organized by the RC of Beirut Metropolitan. Equally important, all events will be launched under the patronage of Ministry of Public Health_ (MOPH) and the RI District 2452. Our partnership in Polio vaccination will go deeply with the MOPH for RY 2018-2019.

With warmest regards
